If you’re living in the new Millennium you’ll know who Jack Canfield is. He’s the author of a little book series called, “Chicken Soup for the Soul”. The thing I like about Jack’s story is that he shares his struggles about how he got rejected by over 140 publishers.
Now imagine this, you got a cool new idea or book and you’ve pitched it over 140 times to expert publishers to see it come to fruition. And every single one of them tells you your idea SUCKS and they won’t back it.
Most people would give up after their 2nd or 3rd attempt. Right! Think about it, how many times have you had an idea, shared it with a couple peeps only to get the wind taken out of your sails? Yaah, most of us.
Now imagine this… Imagine taking an idea, activity, task… whatever… and believing in it so much that after being rejected 10, 20, 30, 50, 100… over 140 times by the so called experts in that industry, you still had the get up and go to not lose sight of your vision or goal and keep pouring your heart into it.
Chicken Soup for the Soul is in dozens of countries, has touched the lives of billions and has brought in over 2 Billion Dollars in sales. You think those 140 publishers are shaking their heads and saying WTF, those could’ve been our books… : ) You bet they are.
So how did a guy like Jack, not lose his tenacity in the face of all those obstacles.
He has a saying that I love, “99% is a Bitch, 100% is a Breeze”!
So are you looking to start a new habit that you just “know” will make your life that much better? It could be exercising, meditating, journaling, eating better or anything empowering the will add more “Life” to your days.
Or, it may be trying to get rid of a crappy habit. Drink less, get off meds/drugs, endlessly surfing the net, TV, or some other disempowering distractions.
The truth is that you can start and stop anything with 99% being a Bitch and 100% being a Breeze. Whenever I’ve failed at anything it was because I only had 99% committment. That’s it, it’s as simple as that. And I’d bet a penny on it that it’s the same for you.
Why? Because 99% is a Bitch. And I don’t know about you, but Bitch’s suck. Let’s say that you commit to exercising everyday (a commitment I made to myself 19 years ago). You will FOR-SURE wake up one day with one of those voices, just like the 140 publishers, and say, “You know I’ve been doing so great exercising, I deserve a day off. I mean Jesus, it’s only one day. I’m a little tired. Don’t beat yourself up. It’s all good!”
And with 99% commitment you’ll say, “You know what, you’re right. We deserve a little day off. Yup, take the day off and tomorrow, we’ll kill it in the gym.”
Then what happens… Pardon my french… But you’re FUCKED! That habit just went down the shitter. A week later you’ll be thinking, “Damn, what happened to my exercising, meditation, journaling, career or committment to excellence… ?
And even after having a habit everyday for an entire year, I lost the drive to exercise in a measly 7 days. Thank god I’m back on the saddle.
You’ve gotta figure out what’s truly important in your life. Your health, finances, relationships, family, social life, religion…whatever turns your crank.
Then pick THE ONE thing you’re absolutely committed to 100%. And make this committment NON-NEGOTIABLE. It’s as simple as that.
My training for Ironman over the past year was NON-NEGOTIABLE. My days would begin at 5am and sometimes my life’s committments wouldn’t bring me home at 10 or 11pm. I’d then have to jump on my trainer and ride or go for a moonlight run until midnight or even 1am.
I was not 99% committted. I was not 99.7% committed. I was 100% committed. No Excuses!
So when that whimpy, whiny little voice peeps up within you (and it always will) we can just ignore it and go on to creating and living our awesome lives.
99% is a Bitch, 100% is a breeze!
Are you picking up what Im putting down? Time to get on it!
So the only question is… What are you going to make a 100% commitment to today?
